Marriage, Couple, and Family Counseling
General Information
The MAE in Counseling concentration in Marriage, Couple, and Family Counseling is accredited by CACREP (See http://cacrep.org/template/index.cfm to learn about the benefits of CACREP accreditation.). The concentration in Marriage, Couple, and Family Counseling fulfills education requirements to obtain a permit as a Marriage and Family Therapy Associate which is the first post-graduation step in becoming a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT) in Kentucky (See http://mft.ky.gov for more information.). Graduates also have the academic qualifications necessary to become a National Certified Counselor (NCC).
Learn from a faculty energized to mentor students into the counseling profession. The department has ten faculty members with varying backgrounds in counselor education and a wide range of clinical experience. You will experience the richness of taking classes with other counseling professionals. All classes are taught in the evenings, on weekends, or online, which will enable you to work or take a full load of classes. Full time students can complete their program of study in two years while part time students can complete their programs in three or four years (see http://www.wku.edu/csa/plans/ Marriage, Couple, and Family Counseling plans.php).
As a student, you will provide marriage, couple, and family counseling under supervision and, if you elect, take part in scholarly activities associated with families, couples, groups, and individuals receiving services at the Talley Family Counseling Center. You will learn the current issues and trends affecting the profession along with the most recent developments in family and couples counseling theory and interventions. Finally, you will learn how to interact with local agencies and with people representing other mental health professions.
