Intellectual Property

The Intellectual Property Office within the Office of Research supports scholarly activities that include teaching, research and other creative actions resulting in innovative ideas with the potential of commercialization.

Innovative ideas – intellectual property – may be of benefit to faculty, staff and student, but may also have a wider reach outside the university environment. The Intellectual Property Office can assist in protecting the rights of all parties involved relating to intellectual property.

What is Intellectual Property?

Intellectual property (IP) refers to creations of the mind that are protected by a set of exclusive rights. These exclusive rights allow owners of intellectual property to benefit from the property they have created, providing a financial incentive for the creation of and investment in intellectual property.

The Policy on Intellectual Property can be found on the WKU Research Policies page along with other research policies, click here.
