Research Project: Citation Format

We are using citation guidelines of the Society for American Archaeology in citing non-original information and preparing the bibliography for the research paper outline and final paper.

Citations are parenthetical, meaning they are given in parentheses within the text. Citations are not footnotes or end notes.

To cite paraphrased information in the body of your outline or paper, give the author's last name and the year of publication either at the end of the sentence or within the sentence.

If the citation is at the end of the sentence, put the last name and date in parentheses before the end punctuation for the sentence. For example:

If the author's name and the information are cited within a sentence, put the date in parentheses after the author's last name. For example:

To cite directly quoted information in the body of your outline or paper, give the author's last name and the year of publication either at the end of the sentence or within the sentence.

If the citation is at the end of the sentence, put the last name, date and page number in parentheses before the end punctuation for the sentence. Note that there is a space between the name and year, a colon between the date and page number, and no space after the colon. The end punctuation for the sentence is placed after the end parenthesis. For example:

If the author's name and the information are cited within a sentence, put the date and page number in parentheses after the author's last name. Note that the end punctuation of the sentence is inside the end quotation mark. For example:

The bibliography is placed on a separate page with the heading REFERENCES at the top. All references are arranged alphabetically by author's last name. The bibliography is single spaced with double spaces between entries.
