Quality Enhancement Plan

WKU is beginning to prepare for its next Reaffirmation of Accreditation by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) Commission on Colleges, which will occur in 2015. As part of this process, we are required to develop and submit a new Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP). By definition, the QEP constitutes "a carefully designed course of action that addresses a well-defined and focused topic or issue related to enhancing student learning and/or the environment supporting student learning and accomplishing the mission of the institution (SACS COC, 2011, Handbook for Institutions Seeking Reaffirmation)."

WKU's previous QEP, Engaging Students for Success in a Global Society, was implemented as part of the 2005 SACS Reaffirmation of Accreditation process. Over the past six years, departments and programs across the university have successfully integrated the student learning outcomes identified in that QEP into the curriculum and co-curriculum; these efforts have been supported by numerous administrative and programs. As a result, opportunities for students to enhance their WKU Experience through engaged learning experiences have expanded dramatically, leading to a concomitant increase in the quality and distinctiveness of a WKU degree. The assessment data bear this out. A 2011 review by SACS Committee on Fifth-Year Reports noted that "the QEP linked the curriculum to the broader community and promoted the capacity and responsibility of students to contribute to society in a positive way," and that "results of multiple assessment measures showed clear, positive impacts on student learning."

The previous QEP has served us well. Student engagement is now more broadly and deeply embedded in the fabric of the WKU academic mission, fulfilling the overarching intent of the QEP concept. It is now time to identify the area of academic enhancement that warrants particular institutional focus over the coming years.

It is important and expected that the QEP reflect broad-based involvement and consensus of university constituencies in the identification of the QEP topic, as well as in its subsequent development and proposed implementation. To that end, we invite individuals or groups to submit white papers identifying and summarizing potential QEP topics. These brief proposals will be reviewed by the institutional SACS Leadership Team. A subset of proposals will be selected for further development during Summer 2012, with the goal of presenting 2-3 reasonably comprehensive proposals to the university community for discussion beginning early in the Fall 2012 semester. It is anticipated that the final QEP topic will be identified by the end of the Fall 2012 semester.
