About The $100 Solution
In 2005, the Rotary Club of Prospect/Goshen in Kentucky challenged their two Rotary Ambassadorial Scholars, one studying in Oaxaca, Mexico and one studying in Belfast, Northern Ireland, to solve a problem in that community using only one hundred dollars. Students were instructed to identify a social problem, study its causes, and with community leaders, determine strategies that could be employed in helping address the issue.
This idea quickly spread around the world when it was introduced to Semester at Sea, a unique study abroad opportunity where students spend a semester on a cruise ship traveling around the world. Since the fall of 2007, students on Semester at Sea voyages have completed $100 Solutions in Ghana, India, Hong Kong, Vietnam, and many more countries. They have provided hot water to orphans, water purification systems, English textbooks, and so much more.
Now, The $100 Solution™ has located its headquarters at Western Kentucky University. Dozens of projects have already been completed in the Bowling Green area, including providing English instruction to Hispanic parents preparing to take the GED, teaching people about car maintenance and family budgeting, helping refugee families who have recently arrived in the U.S., and building a much needed shelving unity for a local children's home.
Your project could be next! Check out the links at the top of the page to learn more about service learning, The $100 Solution™ and how you can create your own project right here in Bowling Green.
"An old man walked up a shore littered with thousands of starfish, beached and dying after at storm. A young man was picking them up and flinging them back into the ocean. 'Why do you bother?' the old man scoffed. 'You're not saving enough to make a difference. ' The young man picked up another starfish and sent it spinning back to the water. 'Made a difference to that one,' he said."
