The GCMS is used to separate and detect volatile components in a mixture. Samples are typically volatile liquids, although other types of samples can be analyzed with the proper sample preparation. Approximately 1 microliter of sample is injected into the system. The hot injection port causes the sample to go into the gas phase where it is carried through the column and into the mass spectrometer (MS) for detection. Although MS configurations vary, ours is an ion trap system. Typical methods include EPA method 8270 EPA method 8260 |
