Genome Discovery Timeline


The NGRI course focuses on freshman and spans the entire freshman year.

How does the program work?

In the GDEP program you will sign up for a two-semester discovery science course designed to give you an authentic research experience.The course is designed for new undergraduates. The class is limited to 20 students so apply today. It draws on themes and techniques from biology, microbiology, molecular biology, genomics and bioinformatics.

Fall Term

Students Isolate and purify bacteriophage from the environment and characterize them using a variety of laboratory techniques including electron microscopy and DNA analysis.

Winter Break

Each class chooses one purified DNA sample to send to the Joint Genome Institute for sequencing.

Spring Term

Students download the genome sequence and use bioinformatics tools to identify genes and regulatory sequences (= genome annotation)
