In the Community
Alejandro Hernandez, SRSC 2015
Corporate Social Responsibility Manager

The relevance and applicability of what we are learning in the Social Responsibility and Sustainable Communities master's program at Western Kentucky University is impressive. I have already put knowledge gained about leadership styles and research approaches to work as part of a Hispanic leadership group advocating for the establishment of the Latino community center in Iowa. The ability of this program to place people's passion for social justice within frameworks that take into account various disciplines and perspectives is a powerful way to create viable approaches to address pressing issues facing our communities.

My education from SRSC fits seamlessly with role as a GA for The $100 Solution™ which in turn gives me a way to apply my education in the real world instantly. I could not have found a better fit for my future than I have here in the SRSC program at WKU.
Kristi Howell, SRSC 2013
The skills I learned in the SRSC master's program have proven incredibly useful in my job as the sustainability director of the Midwest's only sustainability-focused business incubator. From giving me the ability to conduct and explain sustainability-related research in my community to developing relationships with area educational partners and helping them create curricula that will let us grow our own entrepreneurs in west-central Illinois, I find myself returning to SRSC lessons every day. As I work with my team to bring jobs back to my corner of rural America, I've also gotten to enjoy helping my new neighbors understand how we can work together to build a more sustainable and resilient community. It's pretty exciting, working in community education and helping sustainability-minded entrepreneurs realize their dreams. The curriculum and faculty in the SRSC made all of that possible for me.
