Letter from the President

Fellow Faculty and Staff: 

In June of 2007, I appointed Dr. Richard C. Miller as WKU’s first Chief Diversity Officer (CDO). Dr. Miller has served our campus well, and has proven to be sensitive, insightful, and effective. 

The WKU Chief Diversity Officer has direct dotted-line reporting responsibility to the President for purposes of monitoring progress in diversity-related matters, and is a member of the Administrative Council. 

I also combined two previous Committees (Diversity Environment Committee and the Kentucky Plan Committee) into a single, new Diversity Enhancement Committee. The new Diversity Enhancement Committee is to meet on a quarterly basis, and the CDO reports to the President on a quarterly basis regarding the campus climate and the Committee’s activities. 

I have charged the Diversity Enhancement Committee (DEC) with the following goals: 1) ensure achieved status in all eight categories of the Kentucky Plan, the state’s set of mandated measurables; 2) play a central role in the development and promotion of diversity programs across the campus and in the broader Bowling Green area community; 3) lead the University in ongoing discussions and definition of diversity to promote inclusion and acceptance of differences among people; 4) promote diversity in learning outcomes and international learning experiences; 5) assist in efforts to increase the hiring and retention of minority faculty and staff; 6) assist in efforts to increase the recruitment, retention and graduation of minority students, and prepare as many as possible for graduate school at WKU; 7) monitor achievement of diversity indicators in the WKU Strategic Plan; and 8) select and administer the President’s Award for Diversity. 

I appreciate the work of Dr. Miller and the Diversity Enhancement Committee, and I know the campus joins me in supporting their efforts to the fullest extent possible.
