2013 John Russell Award in Mechanical Engineering
In recognition of outstanding academic
and professional achievements in the
Mechanical Engineering Program at
Western Kentucky University
Asa Darnell comes from Cave City KY and attributes much of his work ethic to growing up in a family that operated its own machine shop business. He has achieved a high level of accomplishment in his classes in mechanical engineering while maintaining an active role in multiple engineering projects at WKU. He has recently been contributing to the development of a bio-diesel facility for the campus and has been working in the Engineering Prototype Facility. His experiences include an engineering internship during the summer of 2011 with GE Aviation, and then in the summer of 2012 Asa participated as a research assistant for a NSF funded REU program at the STRIDe Lab of Florida State University. Asa will be starting his M.S. in aerospace engineering from the University of Colorado Boulder in the fall with plans to continue on to a Ph.D. Before starting graduate school he will be spending the summer backpacking in Alaska with the National Outdoor Leadership School.
