2017-2018 Verification Information

Every year the U. S. Department of Education selects a percentage of financial aid applicants for a review of their financial aid information. This review is known as verification. If your application is selected for verification, you will need to submit certain information depending on your Verification Group.

Below is a list of forms required for each Verification Group. Your Verification Group is listed in the Missing Information Letter (MIL) you received from WKU. MIL’s are emailed to the student’s WKU Topper Mail or to the student email account listed on the FAFSA if a Topper Mail has not yet been assigned.

Submit verification documents to KHEAA Verify, not to WKU.

*After reviewing the documents, KHEAA Verify may request additional items to resolve conflicting FAFSA data.

Where do I submit verification documents?

Submit all verification documents to KHEAA Verify rather than the financial aid office at WKU

KHEAA Verify, P.O. Box 4048, Frankfort, KY 40602. Phone: 855-272-8771. Fax: 502-696-7230. Email: Student Worksheet should be completed and signed electronically at  Other documentation can be faxed, mailed, or submitted through KHEAA’s document upload feature.  **Please include your WKU student ID on all documents.

What am I required to do during the verification process?

  1. Go to
  2. “Sign In” with the student’s My KHEAA ID and password or “Register” if you are a first-time user. Parents of dependent students must also “Register” an account at
  3. After signing in, click on “KHEAA Verify," then "Student Worksheet.”
  4. Complete and e-sign the Student Worksheet. Submit the required verification documents to KHEAA Verify, per the chart above. Parents of dependent students must also e-sign the Student Worksheet.
  5. Monitor your My KHEAA account weekly and submit any missing or additional requested information to KHEAA Verify as soon as possible. Your verification status will update to “Verification Complete” once your FAFSA has been verified.
  6. If KHEAA Verify has to make corrections to your FAFSA, your verification status on Top Net will update to “Reprocessing,” then will update to “Complete” once WKU receives the reprocessed FAFSA transaction from CPS.
  7. Once your verification status on Top Net updates to "Complete," allow up to two weeks for WKU to offer your financial aid award via Topper Mail.

Why do I have to complete the verification process?

Every year the CPS (Central Processing Center) randomly selects students for a process called verification. When a student is chosen for verification, the educational institution is required to verify the accuracy of the data reported on the student’s FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid). Students selected for verification must submit required documentation to the institution, and that information is compared to the data on the FAFSA. If a discrepancy is found, the institution makes the necessary corrections to the student’s FAFSA through “CPS Online.” Once the corrections have been processed, the CPS will issue the student a new SAR (Student Aid Report), which reflects any changes made to the FAFSA as well as any change in the EFC (Estimated Family Contribution number).

All verification documents must be received by August 1 of the award year to guarantee a student will be awarded by the fall semester "fees due date," and by January 1 of the award year to guarantee that a student will be awarded by the spring semester "fees due date." WKU does NOT award federal (Title IV) aid until the verification process is complete.

Occasionally a student is selected for verification after being awarded Title IV aid. The student will be subject to all the rules and requirements of verification as those applicants who were selected before being awarded. If the student's federal Title IV aid eligibility changes as a result of corrections made through the verification process, any required return of Title IV funds will be returned to the appropriate accounts through the Office of Billings and Receivables, and the student will owe WKU for any remaining balance that may occur due to funds being returned. CPS will issue the student an updated SAR, reflecting any corrections made to their FAFSA, and SFA will notify the student through WKU email of any changes to their Title IV aid. All Title IV aid changes will also be reflected on their Top Net "Account Summary" (billing account information).
