Parent Loan Information
What action must a parent take to receive a loan?
Dependent students that complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and meet other eligibility criteria (admittance into an eligible degree program,
maintaining Satisfactory Academic Progress, and enrollment of at least half-time) will be offered a Parent Loan (PLUS) as part
of their financial aid package (up to their total cost of attendance).
The student will be sent an Award Notification to their WKU Email Account (if registered) or to the email account on record with the university/reported on FAFSA (if not registered). The Award Notification will provide the amount of PLUS loan the parent may be eligible to borrow based on the student’s cost of attendance. The parent must then go through a pre-approval process to confirm the amount they are eligible to receive (up to the amount awarded).
If the parent was awarded a PLUS loan as part of the dependent student’s financial aid package (or the parent of a dependent student would like the PLUS loan added to the student’s financial aid package), the following steps must be followed before loan funds can be approved or disbursed:
- Complete the Pre-Approval process by going to www.studentloans.gov, signing in with the parent FSA ID, selecting “Request a PLUS Loan” and proceeding as indicated. Your parent will receive an immediate response after completion.
Complete the Master Promissory Note (if one is not already on file with Direct Lending) by going to www.studentloans.gov, signing in with the parent FSA ID, selecting “Complete Master Promissory Note”, selecting loan type of “Parent Plus” and proceeding as indicated.
- If the loan was approved, the Department of Education will notify WKU and WKU will accept the loan on the parent’s behalf and will proceed with certifying the loan.
- If the loan was not approved, WKU will then award the student an additional unsubsidized Stafford Loan up to $5000.
- The student must complete a Master Promissory Note (if one is not already on file with Direct Lending) by going to www.studentloans.gov, signing in with the student FSA ID, clicking on “Sign Master Promissory Note” and proceeding as directed.
The student must complete an Entrance Counseling session (if a first-time borrower) by going to www.studentloans.gov, signing in with the student FSA ID, clicking on “Entrance Counseling” and proceeding as directed.
Parent loan funds are disbursed at the beginning of each semester (if guaranteed prior to the start of the semester). For those guaranteed after the start of the semester, the loan funds are credited in the next applicable refund cycle. Once the parent loan funds have credited the student’s WKU account, a residual check is issued for any remaining balance and sent to the parent’s mailing address, unless parents indicate during MPN process for residual funds to go to student.
