Locust Grove, 2011
This summer I served as the intern for Historic Locust Grove in Louisville, Kentucky. A National Historic Landmark, Locust Grove is a small historic home museum which strives to preserve and interpret the circa 1790 home, outbuildings and gardens as well as the museum's collection to share the stories of the many people who lived, visited and worked at Locust Grove from 1809-1822.
Working at the small museum allowed me to be involved with several critical functions within the museum. My responsibilities included registering items in the teaching and registered items collections, giving tours of the home and outbuildings, and planning, organizing and facilitating activities for the Wood Working and Pioneer day camps. Additionally, I helped with special events and projects that happened throughout the summer.
Interning at Locust Grove was a fantastic experience. I feel that I was able to connect classroom lessons with hands on practice in the field. The experience in the museum work environment will undoubtedly serve me well in my future job search.
