Organizaion: Traditional Arts Indiana
I spent the majority of the summer of 2008 as a fieldwork intern for TAI, collecting interviews, processing data, and assisting with public programming. From Latvian folk dancers to small-town sculptors, I had a variety of subjects in my fieldwork; my favorite work was working with the Bloomington-based Silk Road Ensemble, who were incredibly welcoming and helpful. Beyond field research, I had two other main projects; the first was working with other interns at TAI's public programs at the Indiana State Fair, taking photographs and talking with the public about what TAI does. The second project involved aiding Jon Kay in developing a grant proposal to study Hoosier potters. Overall, my experience was very beneficial in attaining an understanding of how public folk art and folklife programs operate, especially within my home state.
