 WKU Group Fitness Instructor Training

Our goal with this workshop is to equip you with the basic fundamentals to teach a group fitness class in a fun, interactive, and informative way. You will learn how the body works through basic anatomy, physiology, and kinesiology; the components of a group fitness class by learning proper cueing, form and technique, music selection, and choreography. The Group Fitness Instructor Training workshop will give the basic tools and knowledge to prepare for not only a national certification but will be essential if you wish to audition to become an IM-REC Group Fitness Instructor.

Primary Group Fitness Certification

Dates:  TBA
AFAA's Primary Group Exercise Certification is designed to equip those seeking to become certified as group exercise instructors with the competencies needed to design safe and effective group exercise programming for the general healthy population.

This gold standard, fully-accredited (both exam* and program**) and globally recognized certification course is appropriate for instructors who teach free-form and/or pre-choreographed programs.

The following topics are covered in advance of the included one-day certification review and practicum workshop:

*Basic Anatomy, Kinesiology, Biomechanics and Exercise Physiology
*Nutrition and Weight Management
*Group Exercise Program Design
*Essentials of Teaching (Basic Exercise Standards & Guidelines, Motivation, Choreography, Cueing, etc.)
*Exercise- selection, technique, alignment and performance with or without equipment
*Injury Prevention, Emergency Response and Special Populations
*Other Modalities (Aqua Fitness, Indoor Cycling, Dance Fitness, Step, etc.)
*Business Skills and Legal Responsibilities (Substitute teaching, Law and Exercise)

The certification review and practicum workshop is designed to allow participants to review and apply what they've learned prior to taking the written and practical examinations towards the conclusion of the workshop. (Both exams are included in the $299 workshop registration fee).

Upon successful completion of the AFAA Primary Group Exercise certification course, participants will be able to:

*Apply the principles of anatomy, exercise physiology, nutrition and kinesiology to the design and delivery of group exercise classes.
*Formulate the appropriate response(s) for safety issues such as injury prevention, preexisting conditions, special populations, and emergency response protocol in a group exercise setting.
*Outline and appropriately apply the AFAA fitness training recommendations according to the Basic Exercise Standards and Guidelines in group program formats.
*State and appropriately apply the AFAA 5 Questions when evaluating exercise selection and technique.
*Integrate the areas of instructional technique, cueing, music usage, exercise sequencing and choreography within a free-form or pre-choreographed group exercise class setting.
*Incorporate professionalism in his/her practice by following the Code of Ethics and related legal guidelines.

Depending on prior education or experience, AFAA recommends no less than 1-3 months of dedicated pre-study before attending the certification workshop.

Practical Yoga Instructor Training

This program will teach participants how to confidently lead a safe and challenging multi-level yoga class in a variety of settings. The course curriculum combines AFAA's traditional methods of teaching group exercise and its new "Sunrise Yoga Format". You will learn and practice the various asanas and gain understanding of the other key elements of success: tone, setting, meditation, breath and all the teaching skills necessary to be a successful yoga-based fitness instructor. Bring a sticky mat.

Personal Training Certification

AFAA's Personal Trainer Certification is designed to equip those seeking to become Personal Trainers with the competencies needed to design safe and effective exercise programming for the apparently healthy population.

This fully accredited (both exam* and program**) and globally-recognized certification program concludes with a three-day certification workshop. Facilitated by an experienced and degreed fitness professional (BA/BS; MA/MS or PhD), the workshop will review and provide practical instruction in the following areas prior to the proctored administration of the included written and practical exams (both exams are included in the $499 workshop registration fee).

*Anatomy and kinesiology
*Fitness assessment testing procedures (3-minute step-test, sit-and-reach, push-up, abdominal crunch, and body composition screening with skin-fold caliper measurement)
*Program Design
*Nutrition fundamentals and weight management
*Special populations and medical considerations
*Listening, leadership, and motivational skills
*Wellness programming and screening guidelines
Upon successful completion of the AFAA Personal Trainer Certification course, participants will be able to:

*Design and implement an exercise program for specific client situations and goals (e.g. obesity, hypertension, muscle gain, sedentary, other), based on currently accepted industry protocols
*Assess and deliver appropriate response(s) for safety matters such as injury prevention, preexisting conditions, and emergency response
*Comprehend and integrate exercise science subject matter (i.e. physiology, nutrition, kinesiology, and more) at rest and during exercise
*Facilitate triage protocol within initial and ongoing assessments, health risk analysis, and liability concerns
*Define and describe program modifications for special populations (e.g. older adult, hypertension, diabetes, asthma, obesity, basic orthopedics, youth, pregnancy, and more).
*Communicate using verbal/non-verbal, open-ended vs. close-ended questioning, and cueing techniques to motivate individuals regarding exercise
*Incorporate professionalism in his/her practice by following the Code of Ethics and related legal guidelines
Depending on prior education or experience, AFAA recommends no less than 1-3 months of dedicated pre-study before attending the certification workshop.
