Health Science Advising

Academic Advising

Academic advising is a collaborative process between each Health Science students and the Health Sciences advisor in order to ensure that each students meet their personal, academic, and career goals.  The student/advisor partnership requires participation and involvement of both the advisor and the student.  Both have clear responsibilities for ensuring the advising partnership is successful. Students who have declared the Health Sciences major will work closely with the Health Sciences advisor in the Department of Public Health over their time at WKU.

The Health Sciences advisor is here to  assist students in course selection and help them navigate through their time at WKU. Students will meet with the Health Science advisor prior to registration each semester. Prior to registration, an advising hold is placed on all student accounts. It is necessary for students to see their assigned advisor to have the advising hold lifted.

After you make an advising appointment be sure to arrive to your appointments on time (with your cell phone turned off) and cancel appointments if you can't come. Be sure to come to your advising appointment prepared. Review the Health Sciences degree requirements. Fill out the Advising Appointment Preparation sheet below. Make sure any holds on your account are lifted (e.g., parking tickets paid, library fines paid) before your date to register.

Health Sciences 2016-2017 Program Check Sheet

The Health Sciences program check sheet is a tool for students to use by keeping track of the classes they have taken as well as the grade they earned in the course.  The program check sheet is similar to i-cap just in paper form. When students are preparing for there advising appointment, students can refer to this sheet and i-cap to see there progress. This will also help students when trying to decided which classes they need to take next semester. Both i-cap and the program check sheet will be able to show students the classes they have taken and the classes they have left to take.

Health Science Advising Syllabus

The Health Science Advising Syllabus informs students about the academic advising process as well as the advisee and advisor responseibility to have a successful partnership.

The advising appointment preparation sheet is a great tool for students to use before they come to there advising appointment. The preparation sheet allows students to prepare a list of course they plan on taking the next semester as well as an area to list alternates classes to take if a classes is filled before they can register for classes.  There is a midterm progress section for students to fill out how they are doing in each classes in the middle of the semester and the final grade they anticipate on getting in each course. There is a section to prepare question to ask your advisor during your appointment.

The course scheduling grid is great tool for students when they are preparing to register for classes. Students will be able to build there course schedule for the following semester by filling the grid in with the classes they are interested in taking  with the class days and times. This tool will not only allow students to see when, where there classes are but it will show them if there is a conflict with another classes they are wanting to take on the same day or at the same time.
