Residence Hall Director Position

The Residence Hall Director is an innovative, full-time, live-in, professional staff member in a dynamic department committed to creating and sustaining supportive learning environments and helping students to reach their curricular and co-curricular goals. This integral member of the Housing and Residence Life team is responsible for the administrative and managerial functions of one or more residence halls, housing up to 320 students.

Additionally, the RHD is responsible for recruiting, selecting, training, and supervising paraprofessional staff members, is involved in managing an information and customer service oriented desk, and facilitates a programming and community development model designed around a residential curriculum.

The RHD is also responsible for advising and counseling residents, advises Hall Council, is a member of a crisis response/on-call rotation team, and is responsible for adjudicating student conduct conferences. The RHD is supervised by a Coordinator for Housing and Residence Life.

Essential Functions, Duties and Responsibilities:

The following essential functions, duties and responsibilities are customary for this position. They are not be construed as all-inclusive, and therefore may be added, deleted and assigned based on management discretion and institutional needs.

Creating a Supportive Learning Environment:

  • Develops mentoring, counseling, or advising relationship with residents
  • Initiates and executes community development, cognitive, personal, and holistic programs using a residential curriculum model
  • Collaborates with academic and University community partners to create a living environment conducive to student learning
  • Advises hall council
  • Adjudicates educational disciplinary conferences for alleged policy violations
  • Assists in executing the first year student orientation program

Essential Administrative and Managerial Functions:

  • Coordinates the administrative functions and managerial operations of a residence hall
  • Actively conducts the recruitment, supervision, training, mentoring, and evaluation of approximately 12-15 paraprofessional staff members
  • Manages a 24-hour information and customer service desk
  • Maintains and oversees hall and committee programming budgets
  • Responsible for facility, maintenance, and security issues within the hall
  • Adjudicates educational discipline conferences for policy violations
  • Responsible for day-to-day, in-hall intervention and crisis response
  • Provides intervention and response for crises and other issues, in area, via a rotating, weekend on-call schedule
  • Assists in executing the department's recycling and environmentally-friendly programmatic initiatives
  • Collaborates with housekeeping and facilities staff members to maintain a living environment conduce to learning

  • Must model a positive attitude regarding diversity

Conditions of Employment

  • Successful applicant must possess at least a Bachelor's degree and will be required to provide an Official Transcript of the most recent degree conferred prior to the employment start date
  • Successful applicant must gain admission to the Graduate College and be degree-seeking (This provision is waived if a Master's degree has been earned)
  • Successful applicant must be willing to submit to a state and national criminal history background check
  • Position is live-in
  • Previous experience required as a Hall Director, Resident Assistant, Community Advisor, or other residence life related leadership roles
  • Although the majority of the position will function as described below, some aspects are subject to change due to evolving departmental needs

Compensation and Benefits

  • 10-month contract paid over a 12-month period (contract date begins in mid-July and ends mid-May)
  • Furnished office space
  • Partially furnished apartment (apartment use is restricted to the employee, employee's spouse, and employee's dependent children) with internet and cable service provided, utilities and local phone service provided
  • Reserved parking space
  • Salary range of $21,816 to $23,004 with excellent benefits package including: medical insurance, dental insurance, life insurance, retirement plan, partial tuition waiver, University Bookstore discount, and reduced membership to the University's health and fitness facility
