Sustainability in WKU Residence Halls
Big Red has gone green at WKU, and the residence halls are no exception! Housing and Residence Life encourages all residents to engage in sustainable practices and opportunities, from simply remembering to turn off the lights and unplug cords, to going head to head with their neighbors and other universities in a competition to see who can conserve the most energy.
The Building Dashboard
The Building Dashboard was initially implemented so students can easily view and track their residence hall's energy usage so residents can monitor their hall's usage and take part in the effort in reducing WKU's energy use. Residence halls can compete against one another during special energy reduction programs to win prizes. Turn off your lights and shoot for the gold!
WKU Energy Kiosk
The WKU Office of Sustainability has partnered with Johnson Controls to implement the WKU Energy Kiosk. WKU students and staff can see WKU's energy use all across campus, from residence halls to academic buildings.
Housing and Residence Life offers several opportunities for students to participate in sustainability initiatives. Each year students in all residence halls compete in "Reduce Your Use" to see which building can use the least amount of energy! Winning halls celebrate their victories in style with an ice cream party with WKU President, Gary Ransdell!
At the end of every academic year, "Lighten Your Load" allows students to donate unwanted items so they don't end up in a landfill. In 2013, students donated a total of 5,778 items, and 1,042 lbs of food. All items and food were donated to the Housing Authority of Bowling Green to assist the approximately 30 families they serve.
With everyone's help, we can make WKU, and the world, more than just a place to live!
