Spending Accounts and Meal Plans

There are actually four different accounts you can use to make purchases with your WKU ID Card.  They are Big Red Dollars, Dining Dollars, Meal Plan Dollars, and Meal Plans.  These accounts can be purchased using Topnet.

A brief description for each is listed below.

Big Red Dollars

Big Red Dollars is a very convenient way of making purchases for many different products and services on campus and also at participating merchants off campus. Big Red Dollars can be used at various vending machines (no more digging for change) such as soft drink machines, snack machines, and laundry equipment. It is also accepted at the following: WKU Bookstore, Preston Recreation Center, Student Health Services, all WKU Restaurant Group facilities, WKU Parking & Transportation Office, Computer Labs, and the WKU Post Office--plus we have many off-campus businesses that will accept Big Red Dollars--see Off-Campus Big Red Dollars link for a listing of current participating businesses.

To add Big Red Dollars, log on to Topnet or call the ID Center at 270-745-2417.  A minimum deposit of $20 is required for debit/credit deposits, and a minimum of $10 for cash and check deposits is required. Big Red Dollars will roll over every semester.

Dining Dollars

Dining Dollars is the "food" account here at WKU. It can be used at all of the WKU Restaurant Group facilities on campus. You have the added security of not having to carry cash for your food purchases, plus it’s quicker than having to gather up the correct change for your payment, so you’ll move through the cashier’s line quicker. Another plus--Dining Dollar purchases* will receive an 11% discount on purchases in dining locations and cstores.

To add dining dollars, log on to Topnet or call the ID Center at 270-745-2417. A minimum deposit of $20 is required for debit/credit deposits, and a minimum of $10 for cash and check deposits is required. Dining Dollars will roll over every semester.

Meal Plans

Meal plans are also available to use through your WKU ID Card. These plans are the biggest money value for people who plan to eat most of their meals on campus. The residential plans provide a weekly meal balance that resets every Monday morning, plus they come with a Meal Plan Dollar balance for additional purchases beyond a meal swipe.

For your convenience all Meal Plans will be billed to your university bill. This allows the student to choose their Meal Plan on their T.O.P. orientation day and not need to make any payments.

Required Meal Plan Policy
All resident first-year students (i.e., all students living on campus less than two regular session semesters unless age 21 or over) will participate in one of the on campus meal plans at the 10 meal plan level or greater. Meal Plan Members will automatically be re-enrolled for the same plan chosen in the Fall semester for the Spring semester. This requirement is not influenced by changes in class standing that may occur during the student's first year at WKU. If your housing exemption form has been approved and is on file with the university, you will not be required to purchase a Meal Plan. Some exemptions may be granted for verifiable medical conditions that cannot be fulfilled by any of the memberships. Appeals for exemption from this University requirement should be made in an email to the Resident District Manager.

See the WKU Restaurant Group web page for specific information regarding meal plans.

Meal Plan Dollars

These dollars come with a meal plan and work very similarly to Dining Dollars--you can spend them in any on-campus dining facility just like cash, and you will also receive an 11% discount on purchases* in dining locations and c-stores.

Meal plans are purchased for each semester, and Meal Plan Dollars will roll over from the fall to the spring semester.

See the WKU Restaurant Group web page for specific information regarding meal plans.
