Support Standards
Support standards are necessary to ensure the technical environment at WKU is supportable, maintainable and secure. WKU’s Technical Support Services area provides standards to have sufficient resources to efficiently and adequately support the University’s client base and its technology needs.
WKU Employees
Users are strongly encouraged to adhere to the standards defined and should be aware that deviation from these standards will not be supported and could pose a risk to the University’s business continuity, information security, and/or daily operations. These standards apply to:
- All University-owned computer hardware
- All University-owned computer software
- All users of computer systems, including but not limited to University faculty, staff, and student employees.
Support for computers, tablets and smartphones personally owned by WKU employees is limited. WKU ITS does allow some software to be installed on personally owned computers. This includes:
- Office 365
- SPSS
- VPN Client
- Mathematica
- Assistance in connecting to the WKU wireless network
WKU ITS is not responsible for installation or support of the software listed above on personally owned devices. Any issues encountered must be addressed outside of WKU ITS support. If an ITS employee attempts to work on a WKU employee personal device, including software installation or other modifications, any issues that arise as a result will be the responsibility of the WKU employee to address.
Although our classrooms are designed to support BYOD (Bring Your Own Device), we cannot anticipate the wide range of devices clients may bring. If a client connects using a personal device, we offer limited support for issues that arise. While we will do our best to assist, any complications resulting from our involvement will be the client’s responsibility to address.
WKU Students
WKU provides purchasing guidance and support for computers and devices used by students. We strive to address service needs for a wide range of devices, but the extent of support may vary based on factors such as hardware, software, functionality, age, or other considerations.
