WKU Computer Purchasing
Information Technology Services (ITS) maintains a list of recommended hardware for new purchases and upgrades/replacements. This list is intended to ensure compatibility with University technology hardware and software, ensure it meets industry current standards, and position the University for future expansion and upgrades.
ITS reserves the right to review all computer hardware purchases. We will make every attempt to meet the needs of the purchasing department while respecting the best interest of the University. Items ordered by bypassing ITS' approval may be explicitly barred from support by ITS.
Guidelines
The following guidelines should be followed when purchasing computers:
- All computers must be purchased using a WKU Purchase Order.
- All computers must be purchased with an approved 3-year minimum warranty from the manufacturer.
- All computers are available through WKU TopShop (WKU NetID and password required). TopShop Ordering Instructions
- All computers must have an Inventory Control Number assigned before ITS will provide any service relating to the computer.
Recommended Hardware
WKU ITS recommends using a Dell or Apple laptop connected to a Dell USB-C dock and monitor, or a Dell USB-C monitor with a built-in dock, as the recommended workstation setup for faculty and staff.
Apple Computers
If you wish to purchase an Apple computer, access the Apple for Western Kentucky University Store through TopShop.
Through the Apple store on TopShop, you may select items and create proposals, create an equote, or access pre-configured Order Templates. Instructions for Ordering.
Dell Computers
If you wish to purchase a Dell computer, access the WKU Dell Premier Store through TopShop.
Through Dell's catalog on TopShop, you may select items and checkout, create an equote, or access an existing equote or sales order. From here you may submit your order requisition. Instructions for Ordering.
Recycled Computer Program
The Recycled Computer Program allows WKU departments to obtain used Dell or Apple computers that are covered by a one year service contract through ITS.
Other Hardware
If hardware is needed that is not listed or cannot be found in TopShop, please submit a Request for Purchase Information prior to attempting purchase.
Sustainable Purchasing
In support of the University’s commitment to sustainability, ITS purchases Electronic Product Environmental Assessment Tool (EPEAT) Certified computers. EPEAT Certified electronics meet required criteria and optional criteria for environmental performance characteristics, including reduction or elimination of environmentally sensitive materials, use of recycled content or renewable materials, design for end of life, product longevity, energy conservation, end of life management, packaging, and corporate performance.
