Langton named director of WKU’s School of Journalism & Broadcasting
Langton received his Ph.D. from the University of Texas in 1995 and is a faculty member in the University of Miami’s School of Communication where he served as Visual Journalism Program Director. During his tenure, he developed new curriculum and implemented a Master of Arts in Multimedia Journalism. Prior to joining the Miami faculty, he was a faculty member in the University of Missouri School of Journalism.
“WKU’s School of Journalism & Broadcasting has long attracted many of the nation’s best students and faculty members,” Langton said. “Since my days as a graduate student at the University of Missouri – more than 25 years ago – I have been aware of WKU’s success and excellence. I’m honored to have been chosen as Director of the School and excited to begin working with its faculty and students this summer.”
Langton has extensive professional experience both in the United States and internationally. As Director of Photography for Copley Chicago Newspapers, he helped lead a team that won more photography awards than any other newspaper and twice produced the nation’s “Newspaper Photographer of the Year.”
Langton also has significant experience in Latin America. While serving as Director of Photography for El Universo, Ecuador’s largest newspaper, he helped change the concept of visual storytelling in Ecuador. He co-directed the Discovering Ecuador book project. This endeavor involving 38 top international photographers and editors was published as a hardcover book in English, Spanish and French. More recently, along with friend and colleague Pablo Corral Vega, he created and directed the inaugural Pictures of the Year International-Latino America photojournalism contest in which photographers from virtually every Latin American nation submitted more than 17,000 photographs.
Langton has a strong publication and exhibition record. His most recent book is Photojournalism and Today’s News: Creating Visual Reality published in 2009 by Wiley-Blackwell. He has edited and curated several exhibits, including an exhibit in conjunction with Pictures of the Year International’s archives featuring the Presidency since 1944. He is working with the World Press Photo organization interviewing winners of their international contest for their website and archive and their global exhibit.
David Lee, Dean of Potter College of Arts & Letters, called Langton an outstanding choice for the School directorship. “Loup brings strong credentials as a practicing professional and as an academic,” Dr. Lee said. “He’s a leader in journalism education for the 21st century, and his international experience fits very well with President Ransdell’s emphasis on WKU’s international reach.”

Students win Best Video award
Two WKU broadcasting students won the Best Video award in the Kentucky Associated Press Broadcasters’ Best of College Competition.
Twin brothers Ryan and Scott Vennell were honored for their story “An Inside Look at WKU’s Stadium” that aired live on the Homecoming special edition of “Extra Point” last October. “Extra Point” is a student-produced sports highlight show that airs on NewsChannel 12 and is replayed on WKYU-PBS.
The Vennells, both of Chatham, Ill., just completed their freshman year in WKU’s School of Journalism & Broadcasting.

Imagewest International team travels to France for summer projects
Imagewest, a student-run, revenue-generating, full-service advertising and public relations agency in WKU’s School of Journalism & Broadcasting, traveled to France for four weeks this summer to work on client projects for the Global Editors Network (GEN) in Paris.
Imagewest collaborated with GEN, a non-profit association of news editors-in-chief and senior news executives from around the world working to make a collaborative effort to preserve the quality of journalism while supporting the digital environment. GEN was established in March 2011 in an effort to break down the barriers between traditional and new platforms allowing editors-in-chief and senior news executives working in print, digital, mobile or broadcast to gather and share information to define the future of journalism and create new editorial services.
Imagewest developed goals, strategies and tactics to grow GEN’s membership and increase registration for the NEWS! World Summit 2011 in Hong Kong.
The Imagewest International internship in Paris took place June 18 to July 20. Revenues generated from Imagewest were used for scholarships to aid Imagewest International students with trip costs. Interns for the summer internship were Kelley Boothe of Georgetown, Ryan Franklin of Louisville, Paige Johnson of Bowling Green, Jessica Troccoli of Old Hickory, Tenn., and Kara Williams of Graham. Group leaders are Imagewest Agency Director Heather Garcia and WKU advertising professor Mark Simpson.
“Imagewest prides itself on offering students real life experiences beyond just the internship such as job shadows, networking opportunities and career preparation,” Garcia said. “We are very fortunate to be able to offer this unique opportunity for our students to work abroad. This will be life-changing for them.”

Students honored at Parthenon Awards
The event is hosted by the Nashville chapter of the Public Relations Society of America and acknowledges excellence in all aspects of public relations and communications.
“It is always exciting to see such great student achievement come out of the School of Journalism & Broadcasting from both academic work and Imagewest,” said Jo-Anne Ryan, interim director and associate professor. “These accomplishments tell us that our academic program in public relations combined with the practical experience at Imagewest are preparing our students for success in a very competitive marketplace.”
A panel of public relations professionals evaluated entries based on the following criteria: quality of research, creativity and accuracy in strategic planning, effective execution, evaluation efforts, and appropriateness for desired audience.
Imagewest, the student-run, full-service advertising and public relations agency housed in the School of Journalism & Broadcasting, continued its history of success after being awarded multiple Awards of Merit and the top distinction of a Parthenon Award for its “Like Dogs? ‘Like’ Us.” Facebook campaign. This was the agency’s first time receiving a Parthenon, and the first Parthenon awarded to a student entry by the Nashville chapter.
Three student academic teams also received Awards of Merit their efforts on campaigns completed for their public relations senior capstone class in 2010.
“The students work for two semesters on the senior capstone projects,” said Vicki Bagwell, public relations assistant professor in the School of Journalism & Broadcasting at WKU. “This recognition is an excellent example of how determination and teamwork can result in a well-constructed public relations campaign.”
Graduates Rachel Koontz of Louisville, Roseline Twagiramariya of Louisville, Melanie Hart of Richmond and Austin Sterchi of Bowling Green were recognized for their work on the ”iPledge: Count Me in the 2010 US Census” campaign.
“Not only did I have the opportunity to attend the award ceremony and accept an Award of Merit for the senior iPledge campaign, but I also got to see Imagewest recognized for a project I worked on,” said Koontz, WKU public relations and Imagewest alumnus. “Both projects were a great experience for me, and it was satisfying to see that the hard work put into them did not go unnoticed.”
Ben Simms of Nicholasville, Amber Peoples of Morganfield, Kate Gordon of Mayfield and Emily Frankenburger of Nicholasville received an Award of Merit for their work on the “Stirring up Interest About the Census” campaign.
Sara Puckett of Winchester, Ashley Shelley of Middleburg, Amanda Duckworth of Versailles and Amy Brownfield of Naperville, Ill., were also acknowledged for their work on the “Pass it On” campaign.
“We are thrilled to see the student’s hard work honored with a Parthenon Award,” said Heather Garcia, agency manager for Imagewest. “Not only is this a great accomplishment for our agency, but it is nice to see WKU students in the public relations program being recognized for outstanding work too.”
In addition to its Parthenon Award, Imagewest won Awards of Merit for the following projects: Imagewest International – Spain 2010 Book; WKU Noyce Website; Imagewest Blog; Imagewest Alumni Newsletter; and Semester At Sea Booklet.

WKU finishes third overall nationally in Hearst Journalism Awards Program
With this year’s finish, WKU has ranked among the top eight nationally for 18 consecutive years in the Hearst overall intercollegiate competition. University of North Carolina won the intercollegiate championship followed by University of Nebraska-Lincoln, WKU, Indiana University, Arizona State University, University of Florida, University of Missouri, University of Montana, Syracuse University and Pennsylvania State University.
WKU junior Leslye Davis of Greensburg was second in the National Multimedia Championships last week in San Francisco and received a $4,000 award. Junior Tyler Cacek of Columbia, Mo., and senior Bryan Anselm of Carmel, Ind., were among six finalists in the National Photojournalism Championships and received $1,500 awards. Cacek also received a $1,000 award for best portfolio.
Often called the “Pulitzers of College Journalism,” the Hearst program, now in its 51styear, holds yearlong competitions in writing, photojournalism, broadcast and multimedia offering more than $550,000 in scholarships, matching grants and stipends. Points from each competition are calculated to determine the Overall Intercollegiate winners.
Earlier this spring, WKU won the Hearst Intercollegiate Photojournalism Championship for the third consecutive year and 19th time in the past 22 years.
