Gordon Wilson Hall Storage Facility
This site serves as a storage area for the Helm-Cravens Library and the University Archives. It contains lesser-used materials of all types which it has been determined should be kept in the collection but at a lower priority of access. Many of the items are available online, and their volume makes it impossible to house them all in the Helm-Cravens complex. As the Helm-Cravens complex reaches nearer and nearer its full capacity, the need for this additional storage space becomes more and more critical.
In order to retrieve these that have been placed in storage, please go to the Circulation desk in Cravens and fill out a storage request form. Please allow at least 24 hours on weekdays for retrieval of materials from storage (materials requested on Friday, Saturday, or Sunday will not be available until Monday night). Materials will be held for four days after you have been notified; they will then be returned to storage. When you are finished, they are to be returned to the area from which you requested them. Only books may be checked out; journals cannot leave the library.
This area serves as a clearinghouse for the collection housed here. Materials sent for storage are sorted and indexed here. Bound journals and other items that have been borrowed and returned await reshelving here. The first floor also contains periodicals whose titles begin with J and approximately 400 reference books.
The WKU Archives houses many of its larger items, e.g. athletic trophies, on this floor. Many of the individual shelves have been removed and rearranged to allow room for objects of differing heights. Some bound and boxed materials are also stored here.
Over 17,000 volumes of bound periodicals are stored on this floor of the storage area. They include journals covering all subject areas, and some of their runs go back to the nineteenth century.
There are at least as many books housed on this floor of the facility as there are periodicals below. These are primarily additional copies or prior editions of monographs held in the Helms-Cravens Library. There are also a small number of government publications on this floor. Books housed here are labeled as such in TOPCAT 2000.
