5-year BA/MS Program

Sample Study Plan

Eligible Students

Undergraduate students who have an interest in the Department of Mathematics program to obtain both a Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics (#528) and a Master of Science in Mathematics (#085) concurrently must file a Statement of Intent with the Department of Mathematics, ideally before the completion of 75 hours of undergraduate credits. The Department will have a dedicated advisor (BA/MS advisor) specializing in the BA/MS curriculum to discuss the program with the student. The Statement of Intent requires the signature of the dedicated advisor. Acceptance into the program must be approved by the Department Head of Mathematics with his or her signature on the Statement of Intent. The student will be notified of the department's decision regarding formal acceptance into the program.

Classification

Students participating in the Joint BA/MS Program will be classified as undergraduate students until they are admitted into the Master of Science in Mathematics program (#085). Students in the Joint BA/MS Program shall retain the same rights and privileges granted to all Western Kentucky University undergraduate students, including classification as an undergraduate student for purposes of receiving financial aid.

Students participating in the Joint BA/MS Program will be admitted to Graduate Studies and Research at the beginning of the semester following the completion of (1) the total number of credit hours required for the undergraduate degree in Mathematics and (2) the total number of hours required for a four-year undergraduate degree or its equivalent. The GRE requirement will be waived for students participating in the Joint BA/MS Program.  Upon admission to Western Kentucky University's Graduate Studies and Research, students in the Joint BA/MS Program will be classified as graduate students and admitted into the MS in Mathematics program. Such students will be given all rights and privileges granted to Western Kentucky University graduate students.   The students will not qualify for classification as an undergraduate for any purpose after regular admission to Western Kentucky University's Graduate Studies and Research.

All graduate coursework taken prior to Admission to Graduate Studies and Research and intended to be used toward the MS degree must be at the 400G-level or 500-level or above.

Good Standing

After acceptance into the Joint BA/MS Program by the Department of Mathematics, students may concurrently take undergraduate and graduate coursework during the same semester to be applied to their respective undergraduate and graduate degrees.  Students must maintain a 3.0 GPA overall to remain in good standing in the Joint BA/MS Program. Students whose cumulative GPA drops below 3.0 will be counseled by the BA/MS advisor and expected to maintain a GPA of 3.0 or higher for the upcoming semester. Students who fail to bring their cumulative GPA to 3.0 in a reasonable time-frame may be denied graduate standing.

In the event of documented circumstances beyond the control of the student resulting in the student's inability to reasonably complete the Joint BA/MS Program, the Department of Mathematics may recommend to the Ogden College of Science and Engineering that coursework taken in the Joint BA/MS Program for graduate credit be counted as being taken in satisfaction of the undergraduate major requirements of the Ogden College of Science and Engineering and the Department of Mathematics, thereby allowing a BA degree to be awarded. Graduate credit used toward completion of the baccalaureate degree must adhere to WKU's policy for Undergraduate Enrollment in Graduate Courses.

Awarding of Degrees

The BA degree must be awarded at least one semester prior to the MS degree. The MS degree will be awarded on completion of all requirements for that degree.
