WKU's Wei-Ping Pan To Receive Prestigious NATAS Award

Bowling Green, Ky. - Dr. Wei-Ping Pan, director of Western Kentucky University’s Institute for Combustionwei-ping pan Science and Environmental Technology, will receive a prestigious award next month from the North American Thermal Analysis Society.

Dr. Pan has been selected as the 2008 recipient of the Mettler Award. The award is the NATAS’ highest honor and recognizes distinguished achievement in the field of thermal analysis, including but not restricted to thermogravimetry, differential thermal methods, and effluent gas analysis.

The award consists of a plaque, a $2,000 honorarium and a $1,000 travel allowance to attend the NATAS technical meeting – all provided by the sponsor, Mettler-Toledo, Inc.

Dr. Pan will receive the award during the 36th annual NATAS conference Aug. 16-20 in Atlanta.
The Mettler Award is the third major honor Dr. Pan has received from NATAS. He was named a NATAS Fellow in 1997 and received the Distinguished Service Award in 2004. He also served as the group’s president-elect in 2000 and president in 2001.

Dr. Pan received his bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering from Chung Yuan University, Taiwan and his Ph.D. in physical chemistry from Michigan Technological University in 1986. Dr. Pan has taught at WKU since 1986 and was named the Sumpter Professor of Chemistry at WKU in 1993.

Dr. Pan has published more than 100 peer-reviewed papers in the last 20 years, the majority of which are related to coal combustion and emissions, and materials characterization. He has pioneered work in the area of clean coal technology, emission control, and thermal analysis involving effluent gas analysis.

Dr. Pan received the 2006 Distinguished College/University Scientist Superlative Award of the Kentucky Academy of Science and has been the project director of more than 60 projects supported by external agencies, including National Science Foundation, Department of Defense, Department of Energy, Illinois Clean Coal Institute, and several private industries.
