Green, Ky. - The College Heights Herald and the Talisman won national Pacemaker awards Saturday at the National College Media Convention in Austin, Texas.
The national Pacemakers are considered the Pulitzer Prizes of college journalism.
Western Kentucky University was the only university to take home national Pacemakers in both newspaper and yearbook competition.
The Herald, which competes in the four-year non-daily newspaper category, has won the national Pacemaker 12 times. The Talisman also has won 12 national Pacemakers, including five awards since resuming publication in 2003.
The 2008 Talisman was one of seven yearbooks honored by the Associated Collegiate Press during Saturday’s award ceremonies. Other yearbook winners were University of Arkansas, University of Illinois, Kansas State, North Carolina State, Texas A&M and Liberty University.
Julie Kish Byrd-Jenkins, a photojournalism graduate from Mount Juliet, Tenn., was editor of the 2008 Talisman. Meg Fenton, a photojournalism graduate from Louisville, was photo editor. Co-advisers for the 2008 Talisman were Bob Adams and Katie Clark. Fran Gardler was the photo adviser.
During the convention, the Talisman was inducted into the Associated Collegiate Press Hall of Fame for overall excellence and consistent achievement.
The 2008-2009 Herald was one of 13 four-year non-daily newspapers honored. Other newspaper winners were University of Alaska Anchorage, California State University-Chico, University of Miami, Columbia College, School of the Art Institute of Chicago, University of Indianapolis, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Washington University, Creighton University, University of Nevada and Elon University.
The fall 2008 editor was Jan Diehm, a senior from Springfield, Tenn. Susie Laun, a May 2009 news editorial graduate from Shepherdsville, was the spring 2009 editor. Adams is the Herald adviser, JoAnn Thompson is advertising adviser and Jeanie Adams-Smith is photo adviser.
This year’s newspaper competition yielded 228 entries from across the nation in daily, non-daily and two-year college categories and was judged by the Poynter Institute for Media Studies in St. Petersburg, Fla.
The wkuherald.com site placed first the Best of Show competition for the large university websites. Andrew Robinson, a senior from Overland Park, Kan., is the Herald editor and helped develop the new site launched at the beginning of the fall semester.
In the ACP Story of the Year’s diversity category, Angela Oliver, a senior from Atlanta, Ga., and Louisville junior Michelle Day placed third.
Diehm received honorable mention in the Design of the Year’s newsmagazine/special section cover category. Laun and Savannah Thomas, a May advertising graduate from Tompkinsville, also received honorable mention in the ad/editorial supplement in the advertising competition.
Six Herald staff members, five Talisman staffers, Adams and Clark were in Austin to receive the awards.
