More than 30 quilts and wall hangings illustrate how Kentucky quiltmakers looked to both the past and to the future for inspiration. In the first part of the 20th century, Americans' interest in their Colonial heritage contributed to a revival in quiltmaking, yet modern trends such as Art Nouveau and Art Deco also brought a contemporary feel to the work of some quilters and pattern designers.  The revival that began around the time of the U.S. Bicentennial also had a dual effect with some quilters choosing traditional methods while others began experimenting with modern fabrics, techniques, and motifs.  This divergence in approaches continued into the 21st century.

These quilts were selected from the Kentucky Museum's nationally significant collection which numbers more than 250 quilts and textile samples.

The School of Journalism & Broadcasting is proud to present Visión Mundial: Latin America’s Best Photojournalists, a collection of 61 images taken by some of the leading photojournalists of Latin America. These riveting images from Latin America as well as around the globe represent a partial collection of the Pictures of The Year LATAM 2015 where a jury selects the best images from Latin American photojournalists. The 2015 San Miguel de Allende contest attracted more than 1,400 photojournalists to enter and close to 35,000 images and 168 multimedia stories were submitted.

POY Latam was created by Pablo Corral Vega and Loup Langton (Director of SJ&B) in 2011 to promote and celebrate excellence in documentary and artistic photography in Ibero-America and has become the largest and most prestigious contest of its kind.

The POY Latam contest takes place every two years.  The first one was judged in 2011 in Quito, Ecuador.  In 2013 the jury met in Fortaleza, Brazil, and in 2015 the judging took place in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico.  The judging is open to the public and webcast live.  A blog in Spanish, Portuguese and English engages audiences in worldwide conversations throughout the week of judging.  Juries have included such international luminaries as Mary Ellen Mark, Gary Knight, Tomás Munita, Cristina García Rodero, Pascal Maitre and Magdalena Herrera.

The not-for-profit contest has no entry fee to ensure that no talent is excluded based on an economic burden.  It’s supported by a wide-range of sponsors from across the Americas.

The exhibition is free and will be on display until Friday, May 6, in Mass Media and Technology Hall Gallery.

The gallery is open:

Sundays 3 to 9 pm CDT

Mondays through Wednesdays 9 am  to  9 pm CDT

Thursdays and Fridays 9 am to 5 pm CDT

Author and Nation magazine senior contributing writer Ari Berman will speak about voting rights, the presidential election and his important 2015 book “Give Us The Ballot” during a free lecture open to the public in the Mass Media & Technology Hall auditorium at Western Kentucky University on Thursday, April 7, at 7:30 p.m. CDT.

Berman, who Business Insider named one of the “50 most influential political pundits” in the U.S., has written extensively about American politics, civil rights, and the intersection of money and politics. His stories have also appeared in The New York TimesRolling Stone, The Atlantic, Politico and The Guardian, and he is a frequent guest and political commentator on MSNBC, NPR, PBS and C-Span.

Berman’s book “Give Us The Ballot” was called “a must read” by Civil Rights activist and Congressman John Lewis, who said it “should become a primer for every American.” Berman will discuss the history of the Voting Rights Act and the state of democracy in the United States. His book will be available for purchase during a book signing after the event.

The lecture, “Give Us The Ballot: Power, Privilege & Democracy,” is presented by WKU’s Fleischaker-Greene Scholars Program and the School of Journalism & Broadcasting and co-sponsored by The Potter College of Arts & Letters, the Department of History and the Institute for Citizenship and Social Responsibility (ICSR).
