Joining the Semantics Lab

Undergraduate Student Researchers

Each semester undergraduate students acquire research experience by learning about and helping conduct research in the lab. Some students earn course credit (PSY 290 or PSY 490) while others simply volunteer in order to acquire the research experience. Although space is limited, we have opportunities for students who are interested in behavioral research and students who are interested in computational analyses and computer simulation of behavior. In addition to Psychology majors, Gatton students and Computer Science majors have made important contributions and benefited from working in the lab.

Students who are interested purely in behavioral research will learn about stimulus creation, data collection and how they are related to testing specific hypotheses. Naturally, reading the existing research literature is an important part of understanding both the research process and the research questions being asked.

Students who are interested in computational research will learn how to apply computational skills and tools to answer questions about behavior. Currently, the computational projects involve analysis of common text usage and simulation of behavior using a network style of modeling. Although the lab is a psychology lab, Dr. Hahn has a bachelor's degree in computer science and enjoys helping students create and modify software in the lab.

If you are interested in joining the lab, please email Dr. Hahn.

Graduate Student Researchers

Our lab is associated with the Experimental Psychology M.A. program in the Psychology department. Graduate student opportunities are very similar to those described for undergraduate students but graduate students naturally have much more autonomy. After learning the necessary background literature and acquiring some research skills, graduate students develop and complete a thesis research project in the lab. Please contact Dr. Hahn about joining the lab.
