When and where did you study abroad?

Fall 2012 - Spring 2013 - Yeditepe University in Instanbul, Turkey (Exchange Program)

Tell us about your experience abroad:

This past academic year, I had the amazing privilege of studying abroad for my fourth time as a WKU Honors Worldtopper. Since I had previously participated in international programs in England, New Zealand, and France, I wanted to reach beyond the Westernized world and step into a foreign culture very different from my own. The exchange program at Yeditepe University in Istanbul, Turkey, provided the opportunity for me to get far outside of my comfort zone and pursue my academic and vocational goals in a nation with its own language, traditions, historical background, and ways of life. Thanks to my experiences abroad, I also developed a far greater appreciation, understanding, and interest in exploring the world beyond the borders of the United States.

What was your favorite moment abroad?

Though I wouldn't call it a "favorite experience," I would say that my most meaningful experience during my study abroad program in Turkey was my involvement in covering the infamous riots and protests that broke out in and around Istanbul's Taksim Square.

What advice would you give to other students thinking about studying abroad?

GO FOR IT!! From my own international experiences, I strongly believe that study abroad is by far one of the best opportunities for any college student, regardless of majors or career goals. The connections and friendships you make abroad will be the best rewards. Trust me when I say you'll really thank yourself later for not only reading this and thinking... oh yeah, I'd really like to do something like that someday... but seriously just taking that first step now to make an unforgettable international adventure a story of your own. So, what are you waiting for?
