Brittany Wagner began working in the Academic Advising & Retention Center at Western Kentucky University in 2012. Before working at WKU, Brittany worked at the University of North Dakota in various roles in the Housing Department. Following her time in Housing, Brittany worked in the small business sector as a Human Resources Coordinator. She enjoyed working for a small business because she was able to work with all aspects of training and developing human capital. Brittany is thrilled to be a part of the AARC and the WKU community. Her goal is to use the advising function to assist students in reaching their goals.
In her role as Assistant Director of Retention Programs she works in all aspects of retention and student success. The two programs she oversees are the Best Expectation Programs (BEP) and College Readiness. BEP is a unique retention initiative serving at-risk students across campus. The goal of BEP is to assist students in improving their academic performance. Brittany supervises the Peer Facilitators, who work with students in BEP. Each semester the Peer Facilitators return early to campus for training. Training topics include improving academic skills, conflict management, WKU academic policies, WKU resources and referrals, academic planning, and effective communication. Brittany also works with students in the STEPS program, one of the programs under BEP. Students in STEPS have developmental course needs in two subject areas. The STEPS program is designed to provide students with additional support in their first year at WKU. Brittany teaches a section of University Experience designated for STEPS students in the fall semester.
College Readiness is another retention program Brittany works with in the AARC. The goal of College Readiness is to advise and place students into the appropriate courses according to the Kentucky CPE and WKU policies. Additionally College Readiness works with incoming students to inform them of their course placement testing options and to connect them with support and resources to ensure academic success.
