The career counselors within the Career Services Center can assist you with choosing a career path, whether you're trying to decide what jobs are "out there" for your major, or whether you're trying to decide what to "major in."
Career Path Resources
- The FOCUS Career Planning Program is a web-based system provided, free of charge, to students enrolled at WKU. The system includes interest, aptitude, values, personality and leisure preferences inventories to help you assess your skills and abilities, and focus on "good matches" to various career paths. Resources are also provided within FOCUS to help you explore the career paths and academic majors that might be a good fit for you at WKU.
- "What Can I Do With This Major?" is a tool to help you explore occupations related to a variety of academic majors.
- "Resources for Choosing A Career" provides additional websites, handouts and advice to help you research various career paths, gather information about yourself, and access a timetable to help you "stay on track" by completing activities each year while in school, increasing your preparation and chances of obtaining employment in your chosen career field.
- Don't take our word for it. Find out what employers are really looking for... go to the "Career Search Links" to find out what jobs are actually "out there" right now. See what skills these jobs require, where they're located, what salaries are being offered, and learn about the application process. This information may help you make important career and academic major decisions EARLY ON, help you choose the classes that will make you more marketable to employers, and help you determine how to best prepare, obtain and market the skills needed for those careers in which you're interested. Our WKU TopJobs system, along with other job search sites are highlighted.
- To help you define and confirm your career and academic major choice, as well as develop career-related skills and contacts, consider participating in a co-op and/or internship experience. For more information about how to obtain this type of "hands on" experience before your graduate, select the menu item "Experiential Education." Don't forget volunteering as a means of verifying your career and academic major choice, and obtaining experience as well.
