A message from the Associate Dean for Research:
The College of Health and Human Services (CHHS) emphasizes providing valuable services to our communities and improving people's lives. With our wide range of academic programs and supporting units, the faculty and staff in this college strive daily to educate students in an ever-changing world, to provide those services that are critical to enhancing quality of life, and to conduct valuable research advancing knowledge in our respective disciplines. The research generated by CHHS faculty is important for a number of reasons: it serves as a foundation for educating our students with the most current information available; it helps us to recruit the highest quality graduate students and give them exemplary training; it answers timely and pertinent research questions to develop "new knowledge"; and it allows for our faculty to be among the leading scholars in their areas of expertise.
The Dean's office in CHHS is very supportive of our faculty's research efforts and we try to provide them with the resources they need to be successful. We are constantly looking for ways to expand the capabilities of our faculty, whether that means additional time available for their research efforts, new equipment, additional lab space, or increased funding available for graduate assistants. We believe that excellent research results in equally excellent teaching, and vice versa, thus by providing our faculty with what they need to be successful, we are putting a premium on academic quality.
Another way in which we try to ensure the success of our faculty is by making sure that they know where to find funding, both internal and external, where they can present and publish their research, and their expectations for tenure and promotion. I have begun meeting with all new tenure-track faculty during their first semester on campus so that we can discuss internal funding mechanisms, such as the CHHS faculty and student research scholarships, which are available each semester; RCAP and FUSE funding through the Office of Research; and how to identify external funding by using the PIVOT program. I encourage the faculty not only to present their research at their professional conferences, but to engage their students in their research as well and to participate in the CHHS Research Showcase during REACH Week and have their students participate in the WKU Student Research Conference, which is the culminating activity of REACH Week each spring. Finally, publishing one's research is important, and I try to help the faculty identify the expectations of their respective departments, and the expectations of CHHS, so that they can stay on track for tenure and promotion and be successful in their academic careers.
It is an exciting and dynamic time to be a part of CHHS as we continue to grow and thrive. That is a testament to our excellent students, faculty, and staff. If I can answer any questions or be of assistance, please do not hesitate to contact me.
