Communication
The Department of Communication offers two undergraduate majors that prepare students for understanding the complexities of communication in the modern world. As communication majors, students graduate not only with the understanding of how communication serves as the central organizing feature of relationships (interpersonal, family, work, societal, etc.) but also with the tools for diagnosing and changing communication in these contexts. The department supports the concept that a broad-based liberal arts curriculum is essential for a well-rounded education.
The corporate and organizational communication curriculum comprises an interdisciplinary program allowing the student to develop both organizational and interpersonal skills that can be transferred into a variety of occupations and industries. The communication studies curriculum provides a liberal arts program and promotes the responsible use of communication as a tool for understanding in a variety of situations: interpersonal, small group, public, intercultural, and organizational settings.
The Department of Communication also has a vibrant graduate program leading to the
Masters of Arts degree. The 34-hour program features concentrations in organizational
and human intercultural and health communication, as well as course work in the traditional
areas of interpersonal, small group, and crisis communication. Alumni have achieved
successful careers in business, education, government, and non-profit organizations.
The faculty hold doctoral degrees from acclaimed universities; are active in international,
national, and regional associations; publish widely; and have extensive business and
consulting experience.
The Department is home to student chapters of Communication Ambassadors, International
Association of Business Communicators, and Lambda Pi Eta, and the Communication Organizaion
for Graduate Students; students who appreciate commitment to character as well as
achievement; and teachers who relish enriching the lives of others. We look forward
