Certificate in Political Communication

This certificate allows for exploration of the role that communication plays in political systems by combining studies in the fields of communication and government / political science. The Certificate is designed for students seeking preparation for careers as legislative aides, political consultants, campaign managers, speech writers, or lobbyists. Students who complete the certificate will have a solid foundation of communication skills and theory with a working knowledge of the political system.

 

Housed in the Department of Communication and Department of Political Science, students are required to take:

  • COMM/GOVT 488, Senior Seminar in Political Communication
  • GOVT 375, Fundamentals of Political Campaign Management
  • Two (2) courses from the following list of Communication Studies courses:

                          COMM 245 Argumentation & Debate

                          COMM 343 Speech Analysis / Speech Writing

                          COMM 345 Advanced Public Speaking

                          COMM 346 Persuasion

                         COMM 349 Group Decision Making

                         COMM 443 Persuasion in Contemporary Society

  • One (1) course from the following list of government courses:

                        GOVT 310 The American Presidency

                        GOVT 316 The Legislative Process

                        GOVT 371 Public Opinion & Electoral Behavior

                        GOVT 372 Politics & the Mass Media

                        GOVT 373 Minority Politics

                        GOVT 374 Women and Politics

                        GOVT 435 American Political Thought

The certificate requires a minimum of 15 hours.
