The Department of Communication has a national reputation for excellence in teaching, research, and service. Our highly skilled faculty is also known across campus for its student-centered focus.
Recently revised, the curriculum in the Department of Communication teaches students how to improve relationships, analyze social and cultural problems, and develop messages to be successful communicators in a wide variety of situations. In other words, students explore how and why people think, behave, and interact the way they do, and learn the art of communicating with others more effectively.
The skills students will learn in the Department of Communication are vital to success
after graduation. What is the evidence for this? In a June 2008 newsletter published
by the American Management Association, it was stated that communication skills can
“make or break one’s career.” Additionally, the top 5 personal qualities/skills employers
seek, according to National Association of Colleges and Employers Job Outlook 2009
surveys were: (1) communication skills; (2) strong work ethic; (3) teamwork skills;
(4) initiative; and (5) analytical skills. The faculty in the Department of Communication
structures its courses to ensure students develop all of these skills.
