The Downing Museum welcomes visitors to to view works by Joe Downing as a painter and sculptor; the collection includes examples of his abstraction and experimentation with different media formats including leather, linen, canvas, old wood, metal, staples, and found objects. Visitors also have the opportunity to view works by local, state, national, and international artists, both visiting and from the museum's permanent collections. 

Additionally, visitors can elect to watch the Emmy award-winning documentary Joe Downing: Poet of Color and Light. WKYU-PBS, Western Kentucky University's Public Television service, has been honored with two Emmy Awards by the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, Ohio Valley Chapter for this film—in the Nostalgia Program category (Producers Barbara Deeb and David Brinkley, Editor Stephen Kertis and Executive Producer Jerry Baker) and for Lighting in the craft category (David Brinkley). The run time for the film is approximately 25 minutes. 

For groups of 8 or more, Tour reservations are requested.  Please make reservations at least one week in advance. 

 

DIRECTIONS:

Map this location:  Downing Museum >> Caution - GPS Mapping sends you to the exit. Turn in at the new entrance. 
  • From I65: take the William H. Natcher Parkway exit towards Owensboro, exit 20b.  Go to Exit 9, US-231/ Morgantown Road. Turn right on Morgantown road.
  • The Baker Arboretum and Downing Museum are located at 4801 Morgantown road. 1/2 mile west of the William H. Natcher Parkway.  Enter on the left at the new entrance. 

POLICIES:

The Downing Museum staff must ensure visitor's safety as well as the safety of museum artifacts and exhibits. 

  • Do not touch works of art. This includes display cases, pedestals, frames, easels, etc.-dirt, moisture, and other contaminates on hands can stain or corrode the surfaces of artworks.
  • Children under the age of 12 must be accompanied by an adult at all times. 
    • For school groups/groups of children:
      • One chaperone must be present per 10 children. 
      • Chaperones must remain with the group at all times and is responsible for their disciplines and conduct. 
  • Photography for personal use is permitted except when otherwise specified. Flash photography is not permitted. 
  • No food or beverages are permitted. Exceptions to this policy must receive approval beforehand. 

Violation of these rules will result in one verbal warning. Further rule violation will result in group or individual being escorted to museum exit.
