Silver Ribbon Restaurant Day
Mickey Rooney and the Barren River Elder Abuse Prevention Coordinating Council (BREAPCC) share common ground. Both want to end Elder abuse.
In Rooney's recently shared with congress his personal experience of having a family member withhold food and medicine and misuse his money. An experience Rooney said made him feel "trapped, scared, used and frustrated." Unfortunately this is an experience some seniors in the Barren River Area as well.
To bring awareness to this situation the Barren River Elder Abuse Prevention Coalition is sponsors Silver Ribbon Restaurant Day.
The Coalition's theme "Be Aware. Be There," reflects a two-fold goal for this event. The first part of the slogan, "Be There" refers to the fact that elders are most vulnerable when they are isolated and alone. The coalition will be conducting a media blitz during the week prior to the event encouraging individuals to get to know the seniors in their neighborhood or place of worship by taking them out to eat on Silver Ribbon Restaurant Day at a participating Silver Ribbon Restaurant. When elders, are known by their neighbors, and are connected to their places of worship and other community resources, they are less likely to be exploited and more likely to ask for help.
"Be Aware" refers to the fact that participating restaurants will be providing their customers with information to educate them about elder abuse, and how to report it. This information will be displayed on restaurant table cards in restaurants throughout the Bowling Green area. Bookmarks will be available at each participating Silver Ribbon Restaurant bearing the phone number for reporting abuse and telling them how to get further information.
