Conscience of the Human Spirit: The Life of Nelson Mandela
Location: Kentucky Museum

In 2003 the world mourned the passing of Nelson Mandela, one of its most revered champions of human rights. Mandela provided a moral compass for how we treat each other, how we lead our own lives, and how we need to continue to strive for a just, fair, non-racial, and democratic society. Artists around the world have long made quilts in tribute to Mandela.

The 58 quilts in this traveling exhibit, made by United States and South Africa quilt artists, were originally shown in July 2014 at the International Quilt Conference Africa in Johannesburg. Circulated by the Michigan State University Museum, these diverse and powerful pieces reflect the ways in which this remarkable man touched individual lives, changed a nation, and literally served as the conscience of the human spirit for individuals around the world.

Reminders of South Africa: The Nancy Baird Collection
Location: Kentucky Museum

On several trips to South Africa, Library Special Collection faculty emerita Nancy Baird purchased basketry, wood carvings, jewelry, and art from women selling their arts and crafts on the streets and in their native-run shops. This collection serves as a reminder of Nancy’s experiences on safari with husband Tom and of the research trips taken to study British women in early 19th century South Africa. This exhibit shows a sampling of her collection acquired while in the country.
