British Leadership Rhetoric and Communication
- COMM 350 (3 credits): Leadership Communication

- To enhance critical evaluation of historic and contemporary leadership rhetoric.
- To recognize varied leadership styles related to cultural factors and contexts.
- To recognize the roles of culture, context, and social circumstances in shaping leadership styles and leaders' rhetoric in Britain.
- To enhance written and oral communication skills appropriate for an educated person.
We will examine the roles of culture (e.g., examples of art, architecture, music, literature, religion, hierarchy, social hierarchy and change, historic events). We will read materials and reflect on their relationship to leadership, rhetoric, context, and social stability. The syllabus and itinerary focus on three broad historic periods: early Britain, Victorian Britain, and modern Britain. We will read samples of rhetoric from each period and relate them to the site visits, thus making the visits more than a "tour" of England, rather an application of site, time, and place to leadership communication. The itinerary includes visits to sites that will support study of communication in form of speeches, architecture, historic locales, and trends through British history in such areas as government, religion, literature, and science. The specific communicators might include such notable figures as Chaucer, Shakespeare, Cromwell, Disraeli, Gladstone, Churchill, Dickens, Thatcher, the Beatles, etc.
