Gain personal insight into the role of speech-language therapists and services rendered in various Euro-countries.

 

About the Program

This program provides students with a first-hand look at speech language pathology practices in European countries.  Site visits to various clinical settings will allow students to learn about the similarities and differences between the American and European models of practice.  Students will have the unique opportunity to visit academic settings to learn about educational requirements for those studying communication disorders in European countries.  In addition, participation in cultural excursions will immerse students in the rich culture that is unique to each Euro-city to be visited.

  • Learn the different approaches to speech services in various European countries
  • Cultivate an understanding of the difference between health care systems in Europe and the US.
  • Experience living in multiple cultures and countries
  • Adapt knowledge learned to further success in your field of study

Program Requirements

This program presents the opportunity for students to get hands on experience in their chosen field in a European setting and meet with professionals. Participants will be representing both WKU and the United States. The highest levels of professionalism and maturity are required.

 

Eligibility

The Program Leaders may determine other eligibility requirements, but at a minimum, all applicants need to meet these requirements:

  • Permission of instructor(s) is necessary to participate in the program. Contact Kimberly Green or Jo Shackelford directly for details.
  • Current WKU student eligible to register for WKU courses. Students from outside WKU may participate as visiting students.
  • Good academic standing (Undergraduate Catalog p.27; Graduate Catalog p.30)
  • 18 years of age or older at time of departure (parent/guardian permission for anyone under 18 at time of departure).
  • Possess passport valid for at least six (6) months after FLSA return date.
  • No current disciplinary sanctions as verified by Judicial Affairs.
  • Full payment prior to departure.
  • Completion of all pre-departure orientations.
  • Complete the Study Abroad & Global Learning application process on TopNet prior to being registered in this course. We suggest you start this application process immediately and respond to all emails promptly

Program Package

Includes

  • Transportation from home to the U.S. departure airport /return from airport to your home.

Logistical Considerations

  • The course includes a group flight that originates and returns to Nashville.
  • Independent travel (before and/or after the programs start and end date) is permitted with prior notification to Program Leaders. There may be medical insurance issues to deal with, as well as changes to the airline reservations (with possible additional cost to participant), so advanced notice is required.
  • International travel requires all participants to have a valid passport. If you don't have a passport, get one immediately.
  • Students should be prepared to conduct themselves in a mature and respectful manner at all times.
  • This program will also include a fair amount of walking in a metropolitan area. Proper shoes and attire are required.

Funding Options 

You should contact Student Financial Assistance to determine your funding options if needed.  You will need to provide the course number, name, your name and 800#, and the course fee as stated above, in the email you send to financial aid.
