The folk studies students involved with the Allen Country Folklife and Oral History Project at the opening event.
We strongly encourage you to get in touch directly with the department head, Dr. Michael Ann Williams, to talk about your interest in the program. She will be happy to chat with you on the phone or via email to answer any of your questions. Better yet, plan a visit to Bowling Green to meet current faculty and students!
Our MA program is unique in offering specialized tracks in public folklore and historic preservation within the Folk Studies program. A more traditional thesis option is also available. We realize that not everyone has had the opportunity to study folklore as undergraduates and we do not have prerequisites for admission to the program.
Students come from all over the country (and the world) to study folklore at Western Kentucky University. Current students come from as far as England, Vermont, and California. WKU Folk Studies students have had undergraduate degrees from institutions as diverse as Wake Forest, Case Western, Vanderbilt, University of Maryland, and, of course, Western Kentucky University. We don't require a background in folklore and our students come to us with a wide range of range of bachelor degrees such as anthropology, poetry, philosophy, library studies, religion, international studies, as well as folklore.
Although you may be admitted to the program as late as early summer, we encourage you to get your application in before early March for full consideration for a graduate assistantship for your first year.
