Research

While my current position doesn’t include a research component, I hope to be doing meaningful research in Mathematics Education soon!

Bio

I grew up in Minnesota, Iowa, and Kentucky, and graduated from Franklin-Simpson High School in Franklin, KY.  I have two degrees from WKU – one in Music and one in Math – and a Master’s in Math from the University of Colorado.  My academic career has included both teaching and administrative positions at the Middle School, High School, Community College, and University levels.  My non-academic career has included many things from installing septic systems to cooking hamburgers to owning my own business.  In the Fall of 2011 I returned to Western Kentucky University to teach Mathematics.  I definitely feel at home here at WKU and I have really enjoyed working with both students and colleagues over the past two and a half years.

In addition to teaching Math at WKU, I enjoy spending time outdoors and working with my hands.  When I can find the time, I build custom furniture and teach woodworking and woodturning.

Teaching Interests/Philosophy

I believe that Mathematics is about finding patterns, solving problems, and making connections rather than memorizing facts and formulas.  I approach all of my classes from this perspective.  If you want to know more about my philosophy on teaching, learning, or pretty much anything else, just ask.  I enjoy sharing my opinions!
