Requirements to become a GSKyTeach Candidate include the following:
- A baccalaureate degree with a major in physics, chemistry, or mathematics, completed by May 2013
- A minimum undergraduate GPA of 2.75
- Minimum GRE Scores of 150 Verbal, 143 Quantitative, and an Analytical Writing score of 4.0 or higher.
- Minimum PPST score of 174 in Writing, 174 in Math, and 176 in Reading.
- A successful background check
- A passing score on Praxis test in major area (This score may be submitted within the first year of the teacher residency.)
- A commitment to full attendance and participation in all GSKyTeach coursework and program-related activities
- A willingness to teach three years in Jefferson County Schools after completion of the GSKyTeach residency year
- A completed GSKyTeach application
The following courses represent the Program of Study to be completed by all students in GSKyTeach.
SMED 501 – Design Instructional Sequences in Secondary Math and Science (3 credit hours)
Prerequisite: Admission to GSKyTeach Program.
Course Description: Introduction to theory and practice necessary to design and deliver high quality inquiry-based math and science instruction. Students explore and practice the guided inquiry process, create lesson plans, and implement them with students. Field experiences in public schools and/or other appropriate settings are required. Students are responsible for arranging their own transportation to assigned sites. Instructor approval required for registration.
SMED 510 – Knowing and Learning Mathematics and Science (3 credit hours)
Prerequisite: Admission to GSKyTeach Program.
Course Description: An exploration of Essential Questions specifically relevant for teaching math and science. Emphasis on standards for knowing, structure for knowing and learning and how knowledge develops and changes. Field experiences in public schools and/or other appropriate settings are required. Students are responsible for arranging their own transportation to assigned sites. Instructor approval required for registration.
SMED 520 – Management for Positive Learning Environments (3 credit hours)
Prerequisite: Admission to the GSKyTeach Program.
Course Description: Expands students’ abilities to understand how learning theories are applied in instructional settings as students develop, implement, and evaluate activities and strategies for teaching diverse student populations equitably. Emphasizes proactive, positive classroom management for teaching and learning. Fieldwork required; students are responsible for arranging their own transportation to sites. Instructor approval required for registration.
SMED 530 – Designing Instruction for Students with Special Needs & Promoting Literacy (3 credit hours)
Prerequisite: SMED 510 and 520.
Course Description: Designing literacy instruction for diverse learners in mathematics and science.
SMED 560 – Developing Professional Learning Communities for Instructional Improvement (3 credit hours)
Prerequisites: Admission to the GSKyTeach program and permission of the instructor
Course Description: Students form secondary professional learning communities with Mentor and Master Teachers and analyze student performance data to improve teaching and learning.
SMED 589 – Science and Math Internship Seminar (3 credit hours)
Co-requisite: SMED 590
Course Description: Connects theory to practice by helping students complete teaching tasks that demonstrate performance related to Kentucky’s New Teacher Standards
SMED 590 – Teaching Internship (8 credit hours)
Prerequisites: Admission to GSKyTeach program, Teacher Education, and student teaching.
Co-requisite: SMED 589
Course Description: Supervised student teaching experience across fall and spring semesters in assigned off-campus site. Students are responsible for their own transportation to off-campus site.
SMED 620 – Collaborative Research to Improve Mathematics and Science Teaching (3 credit hours)
Prerequisites: Admission to GSKyTeach program and permission of instructor.
Course Description: Development of skills needed to design and implement a data-based action research project to be completed during the semester.
SMED 630 – Action Research Seminar (1 credit hour)
Prerequisite: SMED 620
Course Description: Students present results of instructional innovation and develop conclusions about practice or process implemented in secondary math or science classroom.
