Flags Outside ISO
The flags flying outside of the Sofia-Downing International Center showcase the variety of countries representing the international student population on WKU's campus. Students are welcome to request their flag be flown outside, and the International Student Office staff will do their best to ensure each request is fulfilled. Flags have to be ordered and can take weeks to reach the Office. Some flags may not be available. During the beginning and end of each semester, flags flown outside the office will represent the largest group of international students beginning at WKU or those students earning their degree at WKU and graduating. Flag requests can be made by emailing Sarah Van Alebeek (email@example.com).
Flags for Graduation
During commencement, WKU honors international students by giving them the opportunity to carry their country's flag during the applicable commencement ceremony. Students are selected by country, the highest GPA and are on an F-1 or J-1 visa.
Exceptions can be made for students holding a residence card or passport from another country, outside the U.S. However, students who are U.S. citizens and do not hold residence or citizenship from another country will not be considered to carry a foreign flag as they have a chance to carry American Flag. Priority is given to students in F-1 or J-1 status.
To apply for the exception, please contact ISO (firstname.lastname@example.org) with proof of citizenship or residency outside the U.S. for consideration. You must contact ISO at least one month prior to the commencement ceremony to be considered.
