Xposure

Welcome!

The Western Kentucky University School of Journalism & Broadcasting is looking for outstanding students — especially those from backgrounds under-represented in U.S. newsrooms or who might lack financial resources — to participate in its Xposure Journalism Workshop June 8-16, 2013.

Purpose

The program seeks students with interests in news writing, editing, photography and journalism as a career. During the workshop, students gain important skills through classes, seminars, educational field trips and work with WKU journalism professors and other professional journalists in a learn-by-doing environment. Students report, write, edit and shoot photos for stories published in a newspaper and posted on the workshop’s Web site.

The 2013 Xposure High School Journalism Workshop hosted by the School of Journalism & Broadcasting at WKU in June will continue that tradition. The alumni of these workshops fill media outlets throughout the country, helping to ensure that the news gatherers at media outlets mirror the diverse communities they serve.

In 2012 the Xposure workshop gave students from Kentucky, Tennessee and Indiana a first-hand look at the media business and the skills and tools to produce a top-notch newspaper and Web site while on campus. And two students received a scholarship to Western Kentucky University based on their work and leadership during the workshop.

The Limited Edition newspaper, a trademark of the workshop, features news, commentary, reviews and photos on a variety of topics. It is the culmination of workshop activities and students at the workshop produce it. You can find issues of the paper and more on this Web site.

Qualifications

All high school students are welcome to apply, especially rising juniors and seniors. Applicants must submit an essay on “The Importance of Quality Journalism in Today's Society,” along with a completed application and high school transcript postmarked no later than May 3, 2013.
