What is a first responder (EMT- FR)?

This level of education is designed for the person who is usually first on the scene. Their priority is to provide immediate care for life-threatening injuries, control the scene, and prepare for the arrival of the ambulance.

What is an Emergency Medical Technician Basic (EMT-B)?

Education for the EMT-B deals with the assessment and care of the ill or injured patient. This level is more advanced than the EMT-First Responder. Basic Life Support EMS agencies utilize the EMT-B.

What is an Emergency Medical Technician Intermediate (EMT-I)?

This EMT has passed specific additional education programs in order to provide some level of advance life support, such as initiation of IV (intravenous) lines, advance airway techniques, and administration of some medications beyond those which the EMT-B is permitted to administer.

At the present time Kentucky does not have an EMT-I program.

What is an Emergency Medical Technician Paramedic (EMT-P)?

Paramedic education must meet the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) National Standard Paramedic Curriculum. Paramedics can usually perform, but are not limited to, relative invasive field care, including insertion of endotracheal tubes, initiation of IV lines, administration of a variety of medications, interpretation of electrocardiograms, and cardiac defibrillation.

What is a Critical Care Emergency Medical Transport Program (CCEMTP)?

This program provides the advanced educational foundation required for specialists transporting critical care patients. It prepares paramedics and nurses to serve as members of a critical care transport team.
