Benjamin Polk formerly served as principal bass trombonist with the Baton Rouge Symphony, principal and bass trombonist with the Acadiana Symphony and second trombonist with the Monroe Symphony. He has also performed with various symphony orchestras across Texas, Louisiana, and Arkansas. He has a Graduate Artist Certificate in Bass Trombone Performance from the University of North Texas and music degrees from the University of Minnesota (MM) and James Madison University (BM). At UNT, Mr. Polk was a member of the One O’Clock Lab Band where he recorded four albums and performed at various jazz festivals throughout Europe. He also performed and recorded with the North Texas Wind Symphony and was a founding member of the Lone Star Wind Orchestra. Mr. Polk was the bass trombonist with the UNT Teaching Fellow Trombone Quartet in 2007 when they won the trombone quartet competitions at both the International Trombone Festival and the Eastern Trombone Workshop. He has performed in guest recitals at the Eastern Trombone Workshop, Louisiana State University, Louisiana Tech University, the University of Tennessee - Knoxville and James Madison University. In 2010, Mr. Polk was named winner of the Marjorie Strickland Young Emerging Artist Competition in the Young Adult Division with his performance of Eric Ewazen’s Concerto for Bass Trombone.
As a teaching fellow at UNT, Mr. Polk maintained a studio of graduate and undergraduate students, conducted trombone choirs, and coached chamber music. He has presented clinics and masterclasses at Louisiana State University, Louisiana Tech University, the University of Texas – Pan American and at various high schools in North Texas and Maine. He has also served as an adjudicator for state and district band competitions in Texas and Louisiana.
