I’m actually going to make a difference with this degree. I’m not just going to sit in an office. I’m going to get to give back and help people.
Historically there is the misconception that public health practice only affords opportunities in local health departments. Today’s public health practice is much more broad.
At first I had no idea what the opportunities would be… I had no idea what public health... would…Where it would lead me.. .I didn’t know everything I could do with public health
I had a few speakers in class that talked about working for nonprofits and working for different agencies… the health department, and that’s where I’m doing an internship right now in the disaster preparedness part of public health. So, I am very, very excited about giving back
We as students go out into the community and volunteer and participate in activities that public health professionals actually do.
I think one of the benefits of the program is the diversity of the instructors. Different instructors come from different parts of the world so, they really take their background and they apply it into the classroom, and for students it allows them to have a world class education
We have teachers that are very passionate about what they do, and they really enjoy teaching, and you can tell that they definitely have had a real world experience. I know that I had Mr. Chaney, the director of the health department, last semester… one of the best classes I’ve had because he gave real world experience…Once again to touch on that you can study a book as long as you want, but a book is not going to tell you how to react in the real world.
I felt an obligation to take my learning and my experiences into the classroom: good, bad, and ugly to share with students about the successes and both the failures, and at the end of the day hopefully that student walks away with a better understanding of the overall experience of what they are getting themselves into.
I came down from Mumbai, India because a lot of friends and my colleagues who have graduated from WKU and are working with agencies like CDC, NIOSH, the National Institutes of Health have encouraged me to apply here at WKU. After coming down here, I joined Kentucky Public Health Association… It’s really made me an all around not only domestic but also an international and a national level. And, it’s also encouraged me to apply for my Ph.D. program in Epidemiology. After completing that, I plan to go back to my country and apply the skills and knowledge learned here to make public health system better back home in India.
Our Public Health program is the oldest of its kind in Kentucky. Our Environmental Health concentration has a one hundred percent job placement rate. Our Health Education concentration has faculty well experienced in health program evaluation and health promotion programs. Our students can be extremely confident they can take what they learn in the classroom and apply it all over the world today to become public health leaders.
