Registration Process

Who is considered a student with disabilities?

According to section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990, an individual is considered disabled when 1) a physical or mental impairment substantially limits one or more life activities; or 2) has a record of such impairment; or 3) is regarded as having such impairment. Before SDS is able to facilitate any accommodations for a student with a disability, that student must be registered with our office.

How do I get tested for a disability?

Students must be diagnosed by a licensed medical professional. Depending on the disability, that professional may be a private psychologist, psychiatrist, primary care physician, or specialist. If you are recipient of Vocational Rehabilitation (VR), contact the VR counselor for evaluation resources. Students may also contact Dr. Amy Brausch at 745-4407 to be tested at the WKU Psychology Training Clinic on campus.

How do I register with Student Disability Services?

Students are encouraged to register with SDS prior to enrollment but are welcome to register at any point in their academic career at WKU. To register, the following steps are completed:

  1. Students pick up and complete a registration packet at our office in A200 in DUC or can download the application at the bottom of this page. Students must produce documentation provided by a licensed professional. We request that this documentation is no older than three years. However, documentation older than three years will be evaluated by the SDS staff to determine if the documentation meets the criteria for services on a case-by-case basis.
  2. We will review the documentation and determine the following:
    • Does the student's condition rise to the level of a disability as defined in Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and the Americans with Disabilities Act?
    • What are the functional limitations of the disability in an educational setting?
    • What, if any, accommodations would be reasonable and appropriate for the student?
  3. We will notify the student as to whether the documentation submitted is sufficient or if more information is needed.
  4. Student if qualifies for and wishes to receive accommodations, we meet with the student to discuss his or her needs.
  5. If the student would like to receive accommodations that affect the classroom, SDS will produce Letters of Accommodation for the student to give to his or her professors. These letters will verify the disability and list reasonable accommodations.
  6. The student is responsible for delivering these letters to his or her professors. The student must discuss the listed accommodations, give 1 copy the professors to keep, have the professors sign 1 copy, and the student must return the signed copy back to our office. Returning the signed copy to SDS is imperative in the event that an issue arises in meeting those accommodations.
  7. If a student has problems relative to the provision of accommodations, the student should contact SDS.
  8. In subsequent semesters, Letters of Accommodation will be mailed to the student.
