Master of Arts in Sociology

Thank you for your interest in the Master of Arts Program in the Department of Sociology at Western Kentucky University!

We are very happy that you have taken the time to visit our website, and we hope that you will find the information here useful and informative. Our graduate program offers a small and personalized learning environment that will provide you with the opportunity to work closely with faculty mentors who will take an active interest in your educational goals and research.

Prospective students may use the links on the right to learn more about the application process, to read an overview of our graduate program, to learn about the curriculum, and to view a listing of our faculty and their areas of concentration.

Interested students should submit the following information to the Office of Graduate Studies and Research to be considered for admission to the MA in Sociology program:

(1) online application, which is available at www.wku.edu/graduate
(2) GRE scores
(3) transcripts from all undergraduate and graduate institutions attended, and (4) a letter of intent, in which the applicant can discuss his/her prior background and life experiences that could contribute to graduate coursework and research in sociology, personal reasons for pursuing graduate studies in sociology at Western Kentucky University, areas of interest in the discipline of sociology, one's viewpoint on the importance of sociology for the study of the social world, and future plans.

The application deadline for fall semester admissions in June 15 and the deadline for spring semester admissions is November 15th.

Graduate Assistantships

Any student who wishes to be considered for one of the department's very limited graduate assistantship positions should submit an application letter indicating his/her interest in the assistantship. That letter may include some explanation of why the student is interested in the assistantship and how the assistantship may help the academic experience. Along with the application letter, the student should submit three letters of recommendation before April 1 (for fall semester admission) or November 1 (for spring semester admission). All materials should be submitted to the Sociology Department.

Non-Degree Seeking Applicants

Applicants may also decide to submit a "non-degree" seeking application. This option is available to prospective students who would like to complete up to 12 credit hours of coursework (4 classes) before formally applying to our graduate program. Non-degree seeking applicants must complete the online application, pay the application fee, and submit all undergraduate and graduate level transcripts. However, applicants do NOT need to submit official transcripts or GRE scores until they apply as a "degree seeking" student. Please remember - only 12 credit hours (4 classes) can be taken as a non- degree seeking student before students must formally apply to our graduate program.

Information for Current Students

Current students in our MA program may also find the information on this site useful. We have posted all of the forms and paperwork that you are required to submit as you progress toward your graduation date, and we have posted a "roadmap" to graduation, which will help you in completing all of the requirements for our department and the Office of Graduate Studies.
